Snapchat is rolling out a new feature called “Memories”. It’s a more permanent version of the fast-paced picture app. Not that the pics on Snapchat were ever really temporary. If you think they were, someone should probably take your phone away.

You can store Snaps and Stories in Memories then easily find them with a handy search feature. You can even combine Stories into longer narratives or group older Snaps into a new Memory series.

Here’s what you need to know:

  •      Only Snaps you save to Memories will be saved in the app itself. This is a nice little upgrade so you don’t have to save it to your device and try to find it later.
  •      Have a Snap that you really don’t want anyone to see but you also don’t want to lose it? Memories includes a “My Eyes Only” feature you can select and passcode so it’s safe. This should help you avoid some…awkward…moments.
  •      To view your Memories all you do is swipe up from the camera and the Memories screen pops right up.

Memories is a significant departure from what the platform is founded on. The initial attraction of Snapchat was the instantly expiring pics and videos. However, as older users have discovered the app, they have begun using it as a more generalized social media tool. Snapchat has accommodated these new users by giving them Memories.

Everything you love about Snapchat is still there. You only have to roll with this update as much or as little as you want to. But remember friends, no matter how much we’d like to believe that our Snaps evaporate into the ether and are gone forever, someone always knows how to find it.

Snap wisely and learn to love the My Eyes Only feature.
